Imagine doing construction on your home for 38 years! That is exactly what Sarah L. Winchester, wealthy heiress to the Winchester rifle fortune, did. Sarah designed this 160-room Victorian mansion at the urging of a Spiritualist medium whom she conferred with after the death of her child and husband. By day, Sarah designed staircases leading nowhere and doors opening to steep drops to the garden below, while by night, Sarah held séances with the spirits. Declared a California Historical Landmark, the Winchester Mystery House is definitely worth a visit.

Haunting and isolated, famous and infamous ~ such is the history of Alcatraz Island. Once an historic federal prison, with such “guests” as Al Capone and Robert “The Birdman” Stroud, Alcatraz Island now is occupied only by ghosts and wildlife. Alcatraz Island is also home to the first lighthouse on the Pacific coast, built in 1854. Visitors to Alcatraz Island can tour the remnants of the former federal prison, as well as learn about the varied history of this remarkable island.
